For some millennia, the intense strip of Atlantic Forest that covers Itacaré, in Bahia, belonged to the Tupinambás Indians, later it was conquered by the Cocoa Colonels, as masterfully portrayed by Grapiúna writers in fantastic literary works such as Terras do Sem Fim, São Jorge dos Ilhéus and Gabriela Carnation and Cinnamon (Jorge Amado) and Living Body (Adonias Filho). The fall of Cocoa kept the region as an almost secret paradise, known only among fishermen, surfers and lovers of deserted beaches.
As time went by, surfers from all over Brazil began to discover the secrets of this magical little piece of fantastic waves on the south coast of Bahia. Only 75 km from Ilhéus, Itacaré is currently one of the most popular destinations on the Bahia coast. The city has developed rapidly in recent decades, but it is still possible to find deserted beaches, abundant forest and 24-hour night that make travelers happy even today. Therefore, get ready to live days of immersion in an oasis of tranquility in the midst of the hustle and bustle of Itacaré that is Casa Clareia in the Concha neighborhood.
Located in the APA (Environmental Preservation Area) Itacaré/Serra Grande and surrounded by other conservation units such as the Serra do Conduru State Park, APA Lagoa Encantada, Una Biological Reserve, among others, the Costa do Cacau still manages to maintain the climate of untouched beauty on several beaches in the region. And it is exactly the combination of almost uninhabited strips of sand with a lively city, full of restaurants, shops, bars and parties that so pleases the tourists who arrive there. Itacaré envelops visitors on sunny days and untouched beauty by the sea.
A surf city where, in addition to gliding on the waves, whether on a surfboard, body board or Stand Up Paddle, visitors can practice sports such as canoeing, rafting, capoeira, beach tennis, skateboarding, fut volleyball, beach volleyball, that is, no nothing is missing for those who want to exercise their body in paradise. For those who want to rest, a walk in the mangrove ending with a bath in Cachoeira do Cleandro, a parade in Pituba, the 24-hour street in Itacaré, visiting the Porto de Trás Cultural Center or the Chocolate Museum in Vila Rosa in Taboquinhas, in addition to the countless gastronomic experiences that Itacaré offers.
What else are you waiting for to discover this paradise?
You and your family should be here!
In total, there are 15 beaches in the region: some central (urban beaches), with greater infrastructure and accessibility, and others further away (rural beaches), where the path often has to be taken by walking along the trail. But at the end of the journey, the traveler will be richly rewarded. It is on these more isolated beaches that the true beauty of Itacaré can be found. They leave that feeling of unexplored nature due to the lack of structure and their untouched appearance. Too handsome!!
The urban beaches are: Praia do Forte, Praia da Coroa, Coroinha, Concha, Resende, Tiririca, Costa and Ribeira
Praia da Tiririca is the most constant surf point in Bahia. Located less than 1 km from the city center, the beach is surrounded by rocky shores and has strong waves all year round. It is considered the best place to surf in Bahia and for this reason it is always full of surfers.
The fast, hollow, short and strong waves of Tiririca allow you to practice radical maneuvers almost 365 days a year. Tiririca is not recommended for beginner surfers.
At Praia da Tiririca is the headquarters of ASI (Itacaré Surf Association) and has a skate park, slackline, and a place to play capoeira.
The first time I went to Praia de Itacarezinho it was still called Praia da Camboinha. The name Itacarezinho came from the place that Dr. Eny had bought when there was nothing on the beach, which is wide, full of beautiful coconut trees and a practically untouched scenery. Currently with the presence of the Itacarezinho Restaurant on the left end and the Txai Resort, in the center, Itacarezinho can be considered a large strip of almost deserted sand. Although the two large complexes break the bucolic atmosphere a little, Itacarezinho offers peace and tranquility in a large part of the beach.
With a strong influence of the tide, Praia de Itacarezinho can, on the same day, vary between a large pool or a beautiful sea full of good waves for surfing. It all depends on the moon and the time you are there. To spend the day, enjoy the delicious thatched huts and lounges at Restaurante Itacarezinho, with a refined menu, well-prepared dishes and a great infrastructure. The place is ideal for those who do not give up service on the beach.
Very close to the restaurant, at the left end of the beach, a small waterfall offers visitors a good bath. For those who prefer the desert climate, just leave the car at the restaurant and walk towards the more distant stretches. If the pace allows it, walk towards the right side of the sand strip and go to the beach where the Tijuípe River meets, where you can also enjoy a freshwater bath.
The more adventurous can visit Itacarezinho along the Quatro Praias Trail route, which also passes by Praia da Engenhoca, Praia Havaizinho and Praia da Camboinha (or Gamboa). A great choice for a full day of sightseeing, with the right to a final rest in this paradise of Itacaré.
Praia da Engenhoca is the first beach on the Quatro Praias Trail. The beach is among the favorites of surfers who like to catch waves in Itacaré.
A practically deserted beach, it has a rough sea with plenty of waves, attracting many surfers, especially the surf schools that invade Engenhoca with their students from 6:00 am, and therefore it is difficult to find the beach empty. It is surrounded by coconut trees and has a beautiful view. The small river Burundanga flows to the right of the beach, bringing fresh water that you can bathe in.
Don't expect a super structure on the beach, a few stalls sell drinks, coconut water and snacks, like a good tapioca, for you to spend the day, satisfying the tourist who does not give up a minimum structure to enjoy the beach.
A good tip is to have a cane juice with lemon, pineapple and ginger after taking a walk to the end of the beach and you will find some very beautiful stones, climb these stones and you will have some natural pools with an incredible view. Take a dip, watch the fish and enjoy the moment in this hidden and unexplored place in Praia da Engenhoca.
Praia do Resende begins the series of most preserved urban beaches in Itacaré. Although it is located just 1.5 km from Praia da Coroa, Praia do Resende has a much calmer climate and, depending on the movement in Itacaré, even looks like a deserted beach. On the beach, there are just a few small kiosks that offer simple meals and cold beer to tourists who arrive there. A delight for those who do not like beaches full of buildings and restaurants. The scenery is well preserved and the feeling is of being in a much more isolated place.
The sea at Praia do Resende, as at other beaches in Itacaré, varies according to the tide. There are moments of calm and others of good waves for surfing. With a short strip of sand and surrounded by coconut trees, Praia do Resende has an intimate atmosphere and is a good choice to spend a very peaceful day. At low tide, you can enjoy the formation of natural pools in the right corner and also look for some more isolated spots among the rocks to pretend that the beach is all yours. Praia do Resende is the first on the Caminho das Praias, which also leads to Praia Da Tiririca, Praia do Costa and Praia da Ribeira, considered the four best among the urban beaches of Itacaré.
Prainha is considered one of the most beautiful beaches on the Brazilian coast and it is not by chance. The first time I did the trail I went in search of Praia dos Italianos. The beach was named Prainha after the farm was acquired by surfwear entrepreneur Alfio Lagnado. A beautiful cove that offers perfect lefts, a real school for tubes. And in the right corner, a directive of great respect.
I had the privilege of surfing countless times on this beach, since I worked for many years at Condomínio Villas de São José and at Ecoresort, both on Praia de São José, next to Prainha.
To access the beach, you can take a trail that starts at Praia da Ribeira and lasts about an hour. It is recommended to do the trail with a guide, as the path has several forks and is not signposted. Another option is to drive to Embasa and walk the rest of the way (about 30 minutes). The beach offers a minimal structure, just a stall that sells coconut water, fruit, cocadas, baked cheese and drinks. It has showers and toilets. Another way to access Prainha is through the São José Beach Day Use.
After Praia da Concha, begins the sequence of urban beaches that most appeal to tourists looking for more preserved scenarios, without kiosks or inns. Connected by the street called Caminho das Praias and separated by small stone cliffs, Praia do Resende, Praia da Tiririca, Praia do Costa and Praia da Ribeira form a beautiful set of paradises by the sea. Circulating between them is very easy and it will be possible to walk both on the road and on the stones. Only 500 meters separate the first beach from the last, which makes this route an ideal walk for the whole day. Just dedicate a few hours to each of the sand strips and be happy.
Itacaré is very famous for its beaches, but some regions keep charms far beyond the sea, such as the city's beautiful waterfalls. The region has natural beauties that please tourists of all ages and tastes. Itacaré is surrounded not only by beautiful waterfalls, but also by great trails, spectacular rivers and an incredible green area.
Among the best waterfalls in Itacaré are the Cachoeira da Usina (both the one located in Taboquinhas and the one on the Jeribucaçú River), the Cachoeira do Rio do Engenho, or Cachoeira do Cleandro located in a Cocoa farm. A preservation fee is required. The Tijuípe Waterfall located on the banks of the BA 001 also charges admission to access the area that has a good structure to receive tourists. Another spectacular waterfall is the Cachoeira da Pancada Grande located within the rural settlement of the same name.
Visiting Itacaré and not seeing any of its waterfalls is like visiting Italy and not seeing Rome!
The Tijuípe River determines the border between the municipalities of Itacaré and Uruçuca and is located on a private property that charges a visitation fee. The place is beautiful and in care. The waterfall is about three meters high and 15 meters long. Going up to the main waterfall there is a very nice trail that goes up to a lake and a smaller waterfall. Many tourists leave this farm without visiting this part of this ecological sanctuary. The property has a restaurant that offers delicious food!
The Waterfall of Rio do Engenho is called Waterfall of Cleandro in honor of the owner of the farm. Access by boat or canoe, in which to cross a mangrove, which the first time I visited I felt like I was in an Indiana Jones movie)!. The waterfall is located inside a farm that has a plantation of cocoa, cloves and guaiamum. There are 3 falls with a natural pool good for swimming, a program for the whole family. On the farm there is a restaurant serving snacks and drinks. It was the first place in Itacaré to charge a preservation fee for people to access.
If you are getting ready to walk, bike, run or explore other outdoor activities, Itacaré is the perfect location for you. The city offers trails with historical or adventure points through the natural areas around Itacaré that are perfect for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts of any skill level.
Most of the 3 km of the Prainha trail is protected from the sun, as it is inside the forest. The Prainha trail starts at Ribeira beach, the last of the 4 urban beaches in Itacaré. Right at the beginning of the trail there is a natural pool that dams the waters of the river, on the left. A little further on, at the beginning of the trail, there is a trail on the right side that leads to a very refreshing spring of mineral water. It is worth taking a look!
The trail takes about an hour and Prainha is beautiful and well worth a visit - no wonder it is often voted one of the most beautiful beaches in Brazil!
The route of the trail that leads to Praia da Engenhoca has changed a lot in recent decades. Initially, you would go by car along the road that ends at Praia do Jeribucaçú, stop halfway and walk down to Praia da Engenhoca. After they closed the gate, it was still possible to go down on foot. After prohibiting access through this entrance, another one was made available, where it was possible to leave the car in the parking lot and walk to Engenhoca, first passing by Praia do Hawaizinho and then following the final part of the trail, which is the same as it is today, but it was not always like this.
During the early 2000s, a millionaire investment transformed Engenhoca's trail once again: The Warapuru Project became the first 6 Star Resort in Brazil. The tropical extravaganza, however, was a popular and critical success. As soon as the project was launched in 2004, with opening scheduled for 2007, The New York Times magazine described Warapuru as "Brazil's most exclusive refuge" and the prestigious Wallpaper magazine called it a "James Bond-style hideaway". .
The 17 villas, of different sizes and starting at US$ 1.2 million, were all sold shortly after launch. The majority of buyers, made up of foreign businessmen and rich people from the financial market, still don't know when they will be able to spend their holidays there. Launched with pomp and fuss, the Warapuru Resort today suffers from harsh anonymity and an uncertain future. Outside the south of Bahia, little is heard about the project.
During this period, the development closed the parking lot and direct access to Praia do Hawaizinho, but built the entrance to the current Trilha da Engenhoca up to the fork that leads to Praia do Hawaizinho. When the development was being built, the trail was along the coast, which made the old trail longer but with beautiful views. With the failure of the venture and the abandonment of the work, the part of the coast became impassable and the population returned to the old trail for common use by the population.
The walk takes about 20 to 30 minutes along the Burundanga River and leads to the beaches of Engenhoca and Hawaizinho. It is also along this trail that the 4 Praias tour begins. (Engenhoca, Hawaizinho, Camboinhas and Itacarezinho).
One of the great natural riches of Itacaré is its diversity of species. The fauna of Itacaré is favored by the environmental preservation of the region, guaranteeing this scenario. All visitors can be surprised by unusual encounters with representatives of the local fauna and flora
The city is located in the Atlantic Forest conservation region covered by the APA Itacaré Serra Grande, with a very diverse ecosystem. It preserves 31% of the original riparian forest, which is an admirable rate in view of the high level of deforestation in the Atlantic Forest along the entire Brazilian coast.
It is this preservation that brings great tourist potential to the city, attracting thousands of visitors every year in search of its paradisiacal charms. The natural habitat greatly favors the diversity of local flora and fauna.
